There is a common hadith wherein Hadhrat Muhammad (SAW) has cursed a woman who does a tattoo, eyebrow plucking etc.👇

The words of hadith are as follows:

عن أَبِي رَيْحَانَةَ قال نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ الْوَشْرِ وَالْوَشْمِ وَالنَّتْفِ الخ. Hadhrat Abu Raihana (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the holy Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) forbade ten things which include: Sharpening the ends of the teeth, tattooing, plucking hair… عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ لَعَنَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْوَاصِلَةَ وَالْمُسْتَوْصِلَةَ وَالْوَاشِمَةَ وَالْمُسْتَوْشِمَةَ. Hadhrat Ibn Umar (رضي الله عنه) narrates that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) has cursed a lady who lengthens hair artificially and who gets her hair lengthened, and a lady who practises tattooing and that who gets it done for herself. [Bukhari Vol. 2, p. 879]

 

Although the reasons for the prohibition are not mentioned, Muslim scholars have outlined various possibilities and arguments:

  • Tattooing is considered “mutilating” the body, changing Allah’s creation
  • It inflicts unnecessary pain and introduces the possibility of infection
  • It covers the natural body, and is, therefore, a form of “deception”
  • Non-believers often adorn themselves this way, so it is “imitating the kuffar
